Oak Forest is closer to downtown Chicago than most people in the south suburbs realize. The city sits roughly 24 miles south southwest of the Loop, and its Metra station is in fare zone 3, one zone closer in than Orland Park, Tinley Park’s 80th Avenue station, or Mokena. For a community of about 27,500 residents surrounded on several sides by Cook County forest preserve land, that combination of proximity and green space is unusual.

The 159th and Cicero Corner

The Metra Rock Island District station at 4850 West 159th Street sits at the intersection of two major roads: 159th Street, which is US Route 6, and Cicero Avenue, which is Illinois Route 50. It is one of the busier non-downtown stations in the Metra system, ranking 42nd out of 236 with roughly 1,091 average weekday boardings as of 2018, and the city’s commuter lots have historically held well over 1,200 cars.

Two things follow from that.

First, Oak Forest is a real commuter city. People here are used to leaving the car at home, which makes them comfortable booking a chauffeur for the trips the train cannot handle.

Second, the 159th and Cicero corner is congested in a predictable pattern, and it is a bad place to schedule a tight connection. Train arrivals, station lot traffic, and through traffic on two state routes all converge. Our drivers plan around it. Anyone following a phone map does not.

The Highway Picture

Oak Forest sits between two interstates, and knowing which one to use is most of the job.

I-57 runs along the southern edge of the city. It is the fast route south and, for a lot of trips, the fast route into the city as well.

I-294 to the north is the connection to O’Hare and to the western suburbs. Northbound 294 in the morning is the least predictable stretch of road we deal with. Mileage does not capture it.

US 6, IL 43 Harlem Avenue, and IL 50 Cicero Avenue handle local movement.

Rough airport distances: Midway is around 14 miles northeast, one of the shortest runs of any community we serve, and O’Hare is around 30 miles north. The Midway proximity is a genuine advantage. Oak Forest airport bookings are usually shorter and less expensive than the same trip from Mokena or Homer Glen. Golf Outings Are a Real Category Here

George W. Dunne National Golf Course at 16310 Central Avenue is a Forest Preserve Golf property and has been recognized by Golf Digest among top public courses. It is a championship length public course in a city of 27,500, which means it draws well beyond the local market.

Golf outings are one of the more overlooked group transportation categories, and they have specific requirements:

Clubs take space. A foursome with bags does not fit comfortably in a sedan. An SUV works. Eight players plus bags is a Sprinter van, not two cars.

Corporate outings run larger. A company scramble with 40 players is a coach bus with under floor bays, and it usually pairs with a dinner or awards stop afterward, which is exactly when nobody should be driving.

Timing runs long. Eighteen holes plus a shotgun start plus food afterward is a longer booking than most people estimate. Build buffer rather than paying overtime.
